Tensions rise as Writers’ Corner at Bangla Academy allegedly locked-up
A dispute has erupted at Bangla Academy following allegations that Professor Akbar Ali Siraji, a life member of the institution, locked the entrance to the Academy’s Writer’s Corner without authorization. The Academy authorities have issued a formal letter demanding an explanation.
According to the letter signed by Director General Professor Mohammad Azam, the incident occurred on August 28 around 5:30 PM at the Dr. Muhammad Enamul Haque Building. It is alleged that Professor Siraji placed a personal lock on the main gate of the Language Training Subdivision and the under-construction Writer’s Corner, disrupting access and operations.
The letter states that as a respected life member of Bangla Academy, Professor Siraji holds a responsibility to uphold the institution’s image. However, his recent actions have reportedly caused repeated embarrassment to the Academy.
In addition to the locking incident, the letter accuses Professor Siraji of engaging in inappropriate behavior toward female staff and interfering in official events since the July 2024 uprising. These actions, the Academy claims, have hindered normal operations and run counter to its values.
Responding to the allegations, Professor Siraji denied any wrongdoing. He said, “I didn’t lock anything. They’ve asked for a response, and I will give one. Three locks and a key were lying on the ground. I said, ‘You can keep the key.’ Matters of locks and keys are handled by the security officer.”
Addressing claims of misconduct, he added, “Women are like my mother and daughter. Why would I do such a thing? If I did, it would be wrong.”
The Academy has requested a written response within five days and stated that the matter will be presented to its Executive Council for further review.
