Local Government Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, ‘Whoever the President is, he is an institution. Not an individual, we have protected that institution for our needs.’

He said these things while participating in the discussion of the motion of thanks brought on the President’s speech in the National Parliament on Thursday (April 30).

He said, there have been allegations against us that we tried to preserve the constitution. Yes, we did, because this constitution is linked to our existence. This constitution is linked to our emotions, this constitution is linked to the blood of millions of martyrs of 1971. We fought and struggled for this constitution. This is the constitution of an independent Bangladesh.

Mirza Fakhrul said, Salahuddin Saheb (Salahuddin Ahmed) spoke very truthfully that today we are talking about the President. Whoever the President is, he is an institution. We have protected that institution, not an individual, for our needs. Because if this President had not been there after August 5, then anarchy and lawlessness would have been created in this country. At that time, there is doubt whether we could have protected our country and nation.

He also said, many questions have come here today, I want to answer some of those words. Especially where my name has come up, you (Speaker) are also a witness that we have fought and struggled against the fascists for 15 long years. In the fight against these fascists, our national leader Begum Khaleda Zia was in prison most of the time. Our leader Tarique Rahman was involved in false cases and had to live abroad in exile.

Mirza Fakhrul said, during the fascist period, false cases were filed against 6 million of our people. About 20,000 of our leaders and activists were killed. Our Ilyas Ali, Parvez Hiru and nearly 1700 activists have been disappeared. When our little girl, Tapu, came to her mother's call and said, "I want to celebrate Eid with my father," none of us could hold back our tears.
