This verdict is not an act of revenge: Chief Prosecutor
Reacting to the death sentences handed down to Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Chief Prosecutor of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, Md. Tajul Islam, said the ruling proves that “no offender—no matter how powerful—is above the law.”
When asked about comparisons with previous executions carried out under the Awami League government—including the death sentences of five senior Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and one BNP leader—Tajul Islam rejected claims of political retaliation. “This verdict is not revenge for the past,” he said. “It is a national commitment to justice—a quest for justice.”
He added that Bangladesh is a state where anyone, regardless of rank or influence, must be held accountable for their crimes and face the punishment prescribed by law.
