Minister for Cultural Affairs Nitai Roy Chowdhury has said that this year’s Bengali New Year procession will be celebrated as the “Boishakhi Shobhajatra” instead of “Ananda Shobhajatra” or “Mongol Shobhajatra.”

He made the announcement on Sunday (April 5) after a preparatory meeting at the ministry’s conference room for the celebration of Bengali New Year 1433.

The event also included the New Year festivities of the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Garo, and other indigenous communities.

“The debate over naming the Pahela Baishakh procession is unnecessary. We do not want division; we seek unity through diversity. Therefore, the government has decided that this year’s procession will be called ‘Boishakhi Shobhajatra,’ and this name will be used every year going forward,” the minister said.

Regarding security measures, he added that the event will be protected by the police, BNCC, and Dhaka University’s own security arrangements.

On a question about the July Revolution Memorial Museum the minister said, “Some work remains to be completed there. Once finished, the museum will be opened soon.”
