Liberation War Affairs Minister Advocate Ahmad Azam Khan has called on those whose role in the 1971 Liberation War was controversial to acknowledge their actions and seek forgiveness from the nation.

He made the remarks as a special guest at a discussion titled 'History and Heritage of the East Bengal Regiment and the Emergence of Bangladesh' organised by the Retired Armed Forces Officers' Welfare Association (RAOWA) in the capital on Saturday, July 11.

The minister said that for the sake of broader national unity, those who opposed the Liberation War must openly admit their past role. Without such an admission, it would be difficult for the nation and the freedom fighters to accept them. He also said they must embrace the ideals of the Bangladesh of the Liberation War and democracy.

He also said the ministry will work to ensure state recognition for the contributions of security forces serving in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, adding that honour, not money, is the most important thing.
