Three nomination papers submitted for presidential election

Three nomination papers have been submitted to the Election Commission for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for August 20.

Senior Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the information to the media on Thursday (August 13). According to the EC secretary, one of the submitted nomination papers has been filed in favor of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, while the remaining two have been submitted for Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed Bir Bikrom. Earlier, Mirza Fakhrul was nominated as the presidential candidate by the BNP.

A delegation led by Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan went to the Election Building and submitted the nomination paper to Chief Election Commissioner and Chief Returning Officer AMM Nasir Uddin on behalf of the BNP-nominated candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Dr. Moyeen Khan is the proposer for Mirza Fakhrul's nomination.

Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed has been nominated as the candidate of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami. Two separate nomination papers have been submitted in his favor. Consequently, although the number of nomination papers is three, there are currently two names as competing candidates for the presidential post.

Earlier, Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from the post of the president on July 24. According to the provisions of the constitution, there is an obligation to elect a new president within a stipulated time after the presidential post falls vacant. In continuation of that, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the presidential election.

According to the schedule, voting for the presidential election will take place on August 20. As per the constitution, the president will be elected through the votes of members of the national parliament. The final list of candidates will be determined following the formalities of scrutiny of nomination papers and withdrawal of candidatures.
