The water levels of the Surma, Kushiyara and Someshwari rivers are flowing above the danger mark at four points, raising concerns that the flood situation in low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj may deteriorate further over the next two days, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre.

The centre's bulletin on Monday morning, July 13, said the Surma at Chatak point in Sunamganj is flowing 15cm above the danger level. The Kushiyara at Fenchuganj in Sylhet is 27cm above, and at Markuli point in Sunamganj it is 1cm above. The Someshwari at Kolmakanda in Netrokona is flowing 8cm above the danger mark.

Water levels in the Surma-Kushiyara river system in the north-eastern region have risen over the past 24 hours. The centre said this trend may continue for two more days, after which water levels could stabilise.

Flood situation in low-lying areas adjacent to the Surma-Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj may deteriorate slightly over the next two days.

Meanwhile, the Sangu river in Bandarban has receded below the danger level in the past 24 hours. The centre said water levels in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers in Bandarban, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar may decrease over the next 24 hours, improving the flood situation in those areas.

The centre also warned that the Teesta and Dhudhkumar rivers in Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur and Kurigram may rise over the next 24 to 48 hours and cross danger levels at some points, posing a flood risk in low-lying areas.

Of the 127 monitoring stations, water levels are rising at 80 stations, falling at 44, and remaining steady at the rest.
