Titumir College student Nazim sent to jail after being beaten on suspicion of being Chhatra League member
Nazim Ud Doulah, a student of Titumir College who was beaten and handed over to police, has been sent to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Explosive Substances Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order on Friday, June 26, following an application by the investigating officer. Nazim's lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi confirmed the matter.
Nazim, 25, is a fourth-year student at Titumir College. He is a resident of Roumari upazila in Kurigram and currently lives in the Technopara area of Gazipur.
According to sources, Nazim was detained and beaten by a group of students while leaving the college after an in-course exam on Thursday. He was then handed over to police and later shown arrested in a case filed at Banani Police Station.
The investigating officer, Banani Police Station SI Kamal Hossain, applied to send Nazim to jail. The application stated that students had detained him on the college premises and that he had sustained minor injuries, for which he received primary treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital.
Nazim's lawyer applied for bail, but the court rejected it.
Speaking to journalists at the court, Nazim alleged that Chhatra Dal activists had detained and beaten him on suspicion of being a Chhatra League member before handing him over to police.
However, the case statement alleges that a bomb explosion and sabotage occurred during a Chhatra League and Jubo League procession in the Banani area on September 20 last year. Nazim has been shown as a 'suspected accused' in the case filed at Banani Police Station.
