Tofazzal Murder Case: Accused flees after filing surrender application

A suspect in the murder of Tofazzal Hossain at Dhaka University’s Fazlul Haq Muslim Hall fled the court after submitting an application for surrender and bail.

Rashed Kamal Anik, a student of the Department of Soil, Water and Environment, was represented by his lawyer before Metropolitan Magistrate Juel Rana on Sunday (March 15). However, neither the accused nor his lawyer appeared in court during the hearing.

SI Jinnat Ali of the prosecution confirmed that Anik’s surrender and bail petitions were filed but he failed to appear in court.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the court accepted the charge sheet filed by the Police Bureau of Investigation against 28 accused in the case.

Other accused include Jalal Mia, Ahsan Ullah (Bipul Sheikh), Al Hossain Sajjad, Mottakin Sakin Shah, Suman Mia, Wajibul Alam, Firoz Kabir, Abdus Samad, Sakib Raihan, Yasin Ali, Yamujjaman (Yam), Fazle Rabbi, Shahriar Kabir Shovon, Mehedi Hasan Imran, Ratul Hasan, Sultan Mia, Nasir Uddin, Mobashwer Billah, Shishir Ahmed, Mohsin Uddin (Shafi), Abdullahil Kafi, Sheikh Romjan Ali Roki, Moniruzzaman Shohag, Abu Raihan, Redwanur Rahman Parvez, Rabbikul Riyad, and Ashraf Ali Munshi.

Among them, Ahsan Ullah (Bipul Sheikh) and Wajibul Alam are on bail, while Jalal Mia, Al Hossain Sajjad, Mottakin Sakin Shah, and Suman Mia are in custody. The remaining 22 accused remain absconding.

Tofazzal Hossain, 32, was tortured on the night of September 18, 2024, in the guest room of Fazlul Haq Muslim Hall.

A video circulating on social media shows him being fed before being beaten, with attackers asking him how he liked the food. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around midnight, where doctors declared him dead.
