One year since uprising: Growing concerns over law and order situation
However, the dream of a democratic dawn that inspired millions now lies in deep disillusionment. Though a year has passed since the transfer of power, the country’s law and order situation remains fragile and deteriorating. Experts say crime and violence have reached alarming levels.
Why law and order situation still uncontrolled a year after mass uprising
Bangladesh is currently going through a phase of commemorating the mass uprising. Through various events, the unprecedented fiery moments of last year are being remembered with pride. But it must also be said with regret that the uprising is perhaps not being remembered with the brightness it deserves. The reason for this lies in a sense of insecurity among the people. This insecurity is not only about day-to-day life, but also about the future of Bangladesh. On one hand, the deterioration of law and order threatens public safety, and on the other, economic and political instability also leaves citizens feeling insecure about the future.
Roots of rape culture lie within society
In today’s Bangladesh or anywhere in the subcontinent, no one is shocked anymore upon hearing news of rape. Words like “rape”, “gang rape”, “murder after rape”, in newspapers or TV screens, have become familiar entries in our everyday vocabulary. When a rape occurs, blame is placed on the government, law enforcement is put on trial, and some people vent their anger on the administration. There seems to be a kind of self-satisfaction within this act of blame— “Look, we are protesting”, “We are not responsible”.
