A torch procession was taken out on the Dhaka University campus by the Democratic Student Alliance protesting the trade agreement signed with the United States by the interim government led by Dr Muhammad Yunus.

The procession began from the TSC area on Friday night, May 8.

Leaders and activists of the organisation chanted various slogans criticising the agreement and demanded its cancellation.

The procession paraded through various roads on campus before ending with a brief rally.

Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said there is scope to amend the trade agreement with the US if necessary, as there are provisions for correction within the framework of the deal.

Speaking to journalists after visiting the District Council Natural Park in the Baishtila area of Sylhet on Friday morning, the minister said an international agreement is not a personal understanding; it is a long-term structured process between two states. Therefore, it cannot be changed arbitrarily. However, if any clause is found to be contrary to Bangladesh's interests during implementation, there is scope for amendment within the established framework.

He further stated that international relations and state agreements are not about emotion but about reality and diplomatic processes. Some clauses may be favourable to one party while different for the other, and this is how a 'win-win' situation is created.

The interim government led by Dr Muhammad Yunus signed the trade agreement with the United States on February 9, three days before the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
