Transport shortage causes suffering on Dhaka-Mawa expressway
Passenger movement on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway has been severely disrupted since Thursday morning as the number of public transports dropped sharply in the Munshiganj section, reportedly due to a programme announced by the banned political party Awami League.
Commuters heading to and from the southwestern districts faced significant difficulties, particularly with limited long-route buses, trucks, and goods carriers crossing the Padma Bridge.
Additional police have been deployed at key points, including Khanbari near the Padma Bridge north toll plaza, Nimtala in Sirajdikhan, and Chanbari in Srinagar.
Law enforcement agencies have been maintaining strict vigilance in these areas since morning.
Passengers reported that the expressway appeared nearly empty, with few vehicles in sight. Mizan Hossain, a driver heading toward Mawa Ghat, said, “There are fewer vehicles and passengers. Police are stopping cars at checkpoints, and many travelers are avoiding the road out of fear.”
Hasara Highway Police Station OC ATM Mahmudul Haque said a checkpoint was set up at the Dhaleshwari toll plaza and that no untoward incidents had occurred. “Traffic is somewhat reduced, but the situation remains under control,” he added.
