A court has imposed a travel ban on Moazzem Hossain, former Assistant Private Secretary (APS) to former Youth, Sports and Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Shajeeb Bhuiyan.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Faoyez passed the order on Monday, March 30, following an application by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The matter was confirmed by Md Riaz Hossain, bench assistant of the concerned court.

CID Sub-Inspector Md Abdul Hannan filed the application seeking a ban on his travel abroad.

The application stated that Moazzem Hossain, while in office, amassed assets worth hundreds of crores of taka through lobbying, tender manipulation and extortion. He is also accused of illegally laundering this money to various countries including the United Arab Emirates, Canada and the United States.

An investigation is currently underway against him on money laundering charges. Investigators fear he may flee abroad at any time. Therefore, the application requested that his travel be restricted until the investigation is completed.

Earlier, on May 24 last year, the same court had suspended his National Identity Card and imposed a travel ban following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Additionally, the court rejected his application on January 20 seeking permission to travel to Thailand for medical treatment.
