Trump's special envoy Sergio Gor to arrive in Dhaka today for three-day visit

US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka this afternoon (July 30) for a three-day visit aimed at strengthening Bangladesh-US bilateral engagement and discussing key regional developments.

According to officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gor will hold a series of high-level meetings with senior government leaders during his stay. He is expected to pay courtesy calls on Prime Minister Tarek Rahman and Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, while also meeting the Finance Minister at the residence of the US Ambassador in Dhaka.

As part of his itinerary, the US envoy will travel to Cox's Bazar to visit several Rohingya refugee camps, where he is expected to assess the humanitarian situation firsthand.

Diplomatic sources say the visit is likely to focus on Bangladesh's foreign policy priorities, regional security, economic cooperation and the future trajectory of Dhaka-Washington relations.

Officials believe Washington is seeking a clearer understanding of Bangladesh's evolving strategic position amid heightened regional diplomatic activity. Particular attention is expected to be given to the government's recent diplomatic engagements, including the Prime Minister's visit to China, the Foreign Minister's trip to Russia, and the visit of Türkiye's Foreign Minister to Dhaka earlier this year.

Diplomatic observers also expect discussions on Bangladesh-India relations, particularly the current state of ties between Dhaka and the government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sources indicate that the US envoy may also convey messages concerning regional issues if deemed necessary.

Bangladesh's growing engagement with China, its diplomatic outreach to Russia and Türkiye, and broader regional geopolitical developments are also expected to feature prominently in the discussions.

Since the BNP-led government assumed office, the visit will be the latest in a series of high-level US engagements. In March, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Paul Kapur visited Bangladesh, followed by Brendan Lynch, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, in May.
