UK Minister Jenny Chapman arrives in Dhaka
UK International Development Minister Jenny Chapman has arrived in Dhaka on a two-day visit to strengthen bilateral ties.
She landed at the capital's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday (November 13) morning.
This is Jenny Chapman's first visit to Bangladesh. During this visit, she is likely to announce new UK support for Bangladesh on climate issues.
The UK Embassy in Dhaka said that during this visit, Chapman will visit UK-funded programmes to help prevent violence against women and girls. During her visit to Dhaka, she will meet with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Chairman Ashiq Chowdhury.
She is also expected to attend a roundtable meeting on UK-Bangladesh cooperation on irregular migration.
Speaking about the visit, Jenny Chapman said: “The UK is proud to stand with Bangladesh as a true partner. From supporting the Rohingya refugees to tackling the climate crisis and irregular migration, working together is making a real and positive impact for both countries.”
British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke said: “This visit highlights the UK’s commitment to a modern, mutually beneficial development partnership with Bangladesh.”
During her visit, Minister Chapman will also announce new UK support to Bangladesh, including Bangladesh, to 12 Asian and African countries and regions to address the impacts of the climate crisis. This includes UK support to build resilience for vulnerable and food-insecure families and communities through the Resilience and Adaptation Fund. It will provide thousands of families with skills training in areas such as climate-resilient farming techniques designed to withstand seasonal floods and cyclones.
In addition, the UK announced a £27 million aid package in September to provide food, shelter, clean water and other life-saving services to Rohingya refugees displaced from Myanmar due to conflict and persecution.
