UN General Assembly adopts Bangladesh's 'Culture of Peace' resolution

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a Bangladesh-sponsored resolution titled "Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace", reaffirming the international community's commitment to dialogue, tolerance, solidarity and peaceful coexistence.

The resolution was adopted by a majority vote during a General Assembly session on Friday (July 24), underscoring broad global support for promoting peace, inclusiveness and mutual understanding amid growing international divisions.

Presenting the resolution, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, said sustained dialogue, mutual respect, appreciation for diversity and adherence to the principles of the UN Charter are essential for building peaceful, inclusive and tolerant societies.

He expressed gratitude to member states for their strong support and constructive engagement, while calling for renewed global efforts to foster dialogue over division, cooperation over conflict, and mutual respect over intolerance.

Bangladesh first introduced the Culture of Peace resolution at the United Nations in 1999. Over the past two and a half decades, the initiative has become one of the UN's key frameworks for advancing the values of peace, tolerance, non-violence and pluralism.

The resolution continues to promote respect for diversity, strengthen social cohesion and peaceful coexistence, while contributing to conflict prevention, sustainable peacebuilding and enhanced multilateral cooperation worldwide.
