UN wants to see peaceful election in Bangladesh
The Thirteenth National Parliament election in Bangladesh must be held peacefully, securely, and on schedule, urged Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
At a press briefing held locally on Tuesday, January 20, Farhan Haq highlighted the importance of Bangladesh’s national election. The matter was raised during the UN’s regular news briefing.
In response to a question from UN permanent correspondent Abu Sufian Farabi about the interim government setting the election date after February 12, Farhan Haq said the Secretary-General’s office encourages holding elections on time. He emphasised that the UN expects elections to take place in a secure and peaceful environment, allowing all participants to take part safely. Voters must be able to express their diverse opinions freely.
