US will not support any party in Bangladesh election: Ambassador
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen has said the United States will not take sides in Bangladesh’s national election and will work with whichever government is elected by the people.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission headquarters in the capital's Agargaon on Wednesday (January 28), Christensen said the outcome of the election is solely for the people of Bangladesh to decide.
“I am very interested in the February 12 election and am looking forward to seeing the results,” he said. “The right to determine the election outcome belongs only to the people of Bangladesh. Whoever they choose as their representatives, we are ready to work with that government.”
The ambassador added that during a recent meeting, the Chief Adviser expressed hope that election day would be festive. “I also hope it will be a joyful and celebratory election where people can freely express their views and a very successful poll is held,” he said.
Christensen said he was satisfied with the information shared by the CEC and, like others, was awaiting the February 12 results.
