Verdict in Nasir -Tamima marriage case today
A Dhaka court is set to deliver its verdict today in the widely discussed case filed against cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife Tamima Sultana Tammi over allegations related to marrying without legally dissolving a previous marriage.
The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam will pass the order.
Earlier on May 6, the court fixed June 10 for the verdict after concluding arguments from both the prosecution and defence.
The case has remained under judicial scrutiny for more than five years and has passed through several legal stages, including revision petitions before higher courts. During the trial, the prosecution presented testimony from 10 witnesses in support of its allegations against the accused.
According to court records, Nasir faces charges under two sections of the Penal Code, while Tamima has been charged under three sections. If convicted, Nasir could face a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment, while Tamima could face up to 21 years under the relevant provisions of law.
The complainant's counsel, Ishrat Hasan, told the court that the prosecution had successfully established the allegations and expressed hope that justice would be served through an appropriate verdict.
The defence, however, rejected the accusations and argued that the prosecution had failed to prove its case. Defence lawyer Azizur Rahman Dulu sought acquittal for both accused, maintaining that they are innocent.
According to the case statement, complainant Rakib Hasan alleged that his marriage with Tamima Sultana, solemnised in 2011, was still legally valid when she married Nasir Hossain on February 14, 2021. Following the public disclosure of the marriage, he filed a case alleging concealment of an existing marriage, inducement and related offences.
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), which was assigned to investigate the matter, submitted its report to the court on September 30, 2021, finding evidence against Nasir and Tamima. Subsequently, on January 24, 2022, the court framed charges against the two and ordered the trial to proceed.
