Voters increase by nearly 4 lakh, EC publishes updated list

The Election Commission (EC) has published the updated voter list ahead of the upcoming local government elections. As of July 31, the total number of voters in the country stands at 12,86,32,555.

Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed shared this information at a press briefing at the Election Bhaban in Agargaon on Sunday.

He said, according to the data of those registered as voters until July 31, the total number of voters in the country now stands at 12,86,32,555. The number of voters increased by 3,93,015 between May 14 and July 31.

The EC secretary said if there is any change in the age limit or date for becoming a voter before the next election, or if the commission makes any new decision, supplementary lists may be published alongside the current list.

Meanwhile, work on formulating the code of conduct for the upcoming local government elections is progressing. Akhtar Ahmed said the gazette of the code of conduct for local government elections has been sent to the Ministry of Law. The code of conduct has been prepared for five types of local government elections; city corporations, district councils, upazila parishads, municipalities and union parishads.

However, the law related to local government elections has not yet been sent to the Ministry of Law. The EC secretary said the document is currently under process. Once the process is completed, it will also be sent to the Ministry of Law.

At the press briefing, Akhtar Ahmed also provided information about the presidential election. He said the distribution of nomination papers for the 2026 presidential election began on Sunday. So far, only BNP has collected nomination papers.

Two BNP representatives, the party's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed and Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Nurul Islam Moni, collected two nomination papers from the Election Commission. No other political party or candidate has collected nomination papers for the presidential election from the Election Commission so far.
