VP candidate Shadiq Kayem flout rules, storm vote counting room
A major controversy has erupted during the vote counting of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election after Shadiq Kayem, the Vice President (VP) candidate nominated by student organization Islami Chhatra Shibir, was found inside the vote counting room in violation of election rules. Member candidate Raihan Uddin was also reportedly present.
The incident occurred around 5:30 pm at the University Club on Tuesday. Photos showing both candidates inside the counting room quickly circulated on social media, prompting widespread criticism and raising questions about the integrity of the election process.
Jabir Ahmed Jubel, Assistant General Secretary (AGS) candidate from Biplobi Chhatra Maitri, posted two of the photos online and questioned how the candidates managed to gain unauthorized access.
“According to election rules, no DUCSU candidate is allowed to enter the vote counting room. So how did Shadiq Kayem and Raihan Uddin get in? Under what authority or regulation did this happen?” Jubel asked.
As of the time of reporting, neither the university administration nor the election commission has issued an official statement regarding the breach.
Observers and election monitors have also expressed concern. Professor Gitiara Nasreen of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, who was present at the University Club in an observer role, confirmed the rule violation.
“There was definitely a breach of protocol. Shadiq Kayem did enter the counting room. He was later asked to leave by those present,” she said.
Neither Shadiq Kayem nor Raihan Uddin has provided any comment on the matter.
Election guidelines strictly prohibit candidates from entering the vote counting area. Only authorized officials and designated personnel are allowed during the process.
The incident has cast a shadow over the transparency and fairness of the DUCSU election proceedings, with many demanding an explanation and appropriate action from the authorities.
