We want to further improve relations with India: Shama Obaed

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed has said Bangladesh wants to further improve relations with India. The Bangladesh government does not want the advancement of bilateral ties to be disrupted.

She made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, August 3.

When asked about former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's possible address at an event in Delhi on August 5, the State Minister said the Bangladesh government does not have the time to respond to what a banned organisation and its chief — who is a convicted fugitive in various crimes — says wherever.

She said the Indian government also recently stated in a statement that it does not support the political statements of any fugitive accused. However, it is up to India to clarify its position regarding the relevant online event.

Shama Obaed said we want to further improve relations with India. A very cordial discussion was held recently with India's new High Commissioner in Dhaka. We are moving forward with India with a far-sighted vision. We do not want this relationship to be damaged, and I believe India also does not want that.

She further said Bangladesh has informed India of its position both verbally and in writing multiple times regarding Sheikh Hasina's political activities abroad. If necessary, contact will be made again with India's Ministry of External Affairs on this matter.

Regarding the impact of such events on bilateral relations, the State Minister said it could damage the relationship. However, we want India-Bangladesh relations to move towards further improvement.

On the issue of an Indian parliamentary committee report expressing concern over China's influence in Bangladesh, she said Bangladesh is an independent and sovereign country. Our communication, commercial and bilateral relations with all countries, including India and China, will continue.
