West Bengal election result will not affect bilateral ties: Information Adviser

Bangladesh has no observation to make regarding the West Bengal election in India, Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman has said, describing it as an internal matter of India. He stated that Bangladesh will maintain relations with whoever is elected by the people.

The adviser made the remarks at a press conference on the progress of various government activities at the conference room of the Directorate of Information at the Secretariat on Tuesday, May 5.

"We do not wish to consider West Bengal separately. Any agreement between the two countries is made at the state level. The outcome of state-level elections in India will not affect that relationship," he said.

Dr Zahed further said that Bangladesh and India share longstanding friendly relations, which will continue in the future based on mutual interests. No election or political rhetoric will hinder this relationship.

Regarding various statements about Bangladesh that emerged during the West Bengal election campaign, the adviser said those were primarily electoral political statements. Once a government is formed, cooperation and relations between the two countries will naturally continue.

Noting that India is an important neighbour of Bangladesh as a state, the information adviser said the mutual communication and cooperation between the two countries will continue.
