What DMP said about Shirin Sharmin's arrest

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has officially confirmed the arrest of former National Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury.

DMP Media Branch Deputy Commissioner M N Nasiruddin told journalists that she was arrested from a residence in Dhanmondi around 4:00 am on Tuesday, April 7. She was later brought to the DB office around 5:00 am.

He said she is currently being interrogated. Preliminary information indicates that multiple cases have been filed against her in connection with the July uprising at Banani and Uttara police stations in the capital. Police also reported that a case has been filed against her in Rangpur.

DC M N Nasiruddin further said that subsequent legal procedures will be disclosed after the interrogation is completed.

Earlier on Tuesday, a team of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested her from her residence in Dhanmondi. It has been reported that she had been in hiding since August 5, 2024.
