What to do during lightning strikes: Met office issues safety guidelines
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued safety guidelines for the public as thunderstorms are likely in different parts of the country. The department has warned that minor negligence can lead to major accidents, making it essential to follow certain instructions during lightning strikes.
According to the warning, if dark clouds appear in the sky or thunder is heard, people should immediately leave risky areas and take shelter in safe places. The department has advised following their slogan strictly: "Go indoors when you hear thunder."
Staying inside homes is the safest option during lightning strikes. Doors and windows should be kept closed, and touching any metallic objects, including window grills, should be avoided. Children must be kept inside and prevented from playing outdoors or flying kites.
If caught outside, people should take shelter in a safe place immediately. Remaining under trees, in open fields, or under metal sheds is extremely dangerous. People should also avoid going into rivers, haors, or other water bodies.
Touching electrical lines, metallic objects, or connected devices should be avoided during this time. Lying on the ground is also risky, and such behaviour should be avoided.
The meteorological department further said that hearing thunder means being within striking distance of the storm. People should wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap before leaving their safe shelter.
Maintaining awareness and caution can significantly reduce the risk of death from lightning strikes.
