The wife and son of Rup Lal Das, who was killed in a mob beating in Taraganj, Rangpur, have allegedly been threatened with death unless they withdraw the murder case. Rup Lal’s wife, Bharati Rani, has filed a written complaint with Taraganj police station.

Bharati Rani said her husband Rup Lal Das and her son-in-law Pradip Lal were beaten to death by a mob on August 9 last year. She filed a murder case at Taraganj police station the following day. After analysing technology data and video footage, police arrested 12 people in connection with the incident.

According to the complaint, one of the accused, Rubel Paikar, 30, threatened her and her son at Taraganj market on January 22 after being released on bail. Another accused, Sohag, has also been issuing repeated threats and intimidation.

Bharati Rani said that after refusing to withdraw the case, the accused began verbally abusing her and threatening to kill her family. She said she had sought justice but now lives in extreme insecurity. Her son, who runs a small shop to support the family, is also living in fear.

Rup Lal’s son Joy Rabidas said Rubel Paikar and Sohag can be clearly seen in the video footage of his father’s killing, yet they are moving freely in the area and threatening the family. He asked whether demanding justice for his father’s murder is a crime.

Denying the allegations, Rubel Paikar claimed the accusations were fabricated, saying there are hundreds of accused in the case and that the claim he threatened them is false. He said he does not even know the complainant. Attempts to contact Sohag were unsuccessful.

Taraganj police station duty officer SI Pradip Kumar Barman confirmed that a complaint has been received and said the matter will be investigated and necessary action taken.
