Working-age population in country stands at 7.17 crore

The current working-age population or labour force in the country stands at 7 crore 17 lakh 10 thousand, said Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

The minister made the statement in response to a written question from Member of Parliament Zainal Abedin during the National Parliament session on Monday, March 30. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal presided over the session.

Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the latest Labour Force Survey was conducted in 2024 by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) under the project 'Development of Labour Market Information through Labour Force Survey'.

According to the Labour Force Survey 2024, the working-age population or labour force (employed and unemployed population aged 15 years and above) in the country is 7 crore 17 lakh 10 thousand. Of these, 4 crore 80 lakh 20 thousand are male and 2 crore 36 lakh 90 thousand are female.

A project proposal is currently under process with the Planning Commission to conduct the survey in 2026. According to the Labour Force Survey 2024, an average of 13.6 lakh people aged 15 years and above enter the workforce in the country each year.
