Writ challenges legality of notification banning Awami League activities

A writ petition has been filed challenging the legality of the notification that banned all activities of Bangladesh Awami League and its associate, affiliated and fraternal organisations.

Deputy Attorney General Nur Mohammad Azmi confirmed the matter on Monday, September 7.

The writ petition has sought a rule questioning why the notification issued on May 12, 2025, should not be declared unlawful. It also requested a stay on the operation of the notification pending the hearing of the rule.

The writ is listed as item number 60 on the cause list for Monday before the High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan.

Earlier, on May 12, 2025, the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs had issued the notification. The notification had stated that all activities of the Awami League and its associate, affiliated and fraternal organisations would be banned until the completion of trial proceedings against their leaders and activists before the International Crimes Tribunal. The ban covered publications, media campaigns, online and social media activities, processions, meetings, assemblies and conferences.

The writ was filed by Md Al Amin, a resident of Srinagar, Munshiganj.
