Writ filed challenging appointment of new BB Governor

A writ petition has been filed in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court challenging the removal of former Ahsan H Mansur and the appointment of Md. Mostakur Rahman as the new governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB).

The petition was filed on Thursday (March 5) by Supreme Court lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun, naming the Finance Secretary and other relevant officials as respondents.

The government had removed Mansur on February 25 and appointed Mostakur Rahman as the new governor through a notification issued by the Financial Institutions Division of the Finance Ministry.

The notice annulled the remaining term of Mansur’s tenure, stating the order was issued in the public interest and effective immediately.

A separate notification formalised Mustakur Rahman’s appointment for a four-year term from the date of joining, subject to the cessation of all prior affiliations with other organisations.

The notification also cited public interest as the basis for immediate effect.
