Writ filed in HC over Ad-Din Hospital infant deaths

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking Tk 1 crore in compensation for each family affected by the deaths of six newborns at Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in Magbazar, Dhaka. The petition also seeks directives for a proper investigation and trial of those responsible.

The writ was filed on Sunday morning, June 7, before the High Court bench of Justice Razik Al Jalil and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury by lawyer Yunus Ali Akanda.

The petition requests the formation of a high-level judicial investigation committee. The hearing on the writ may take place on Monday, June 8.

Akanda alleged that the government has tried to cover up the incident through its investigation committee. He claimed that hospital authorities were negligent, and also expressed doubt over whether the hospital was constructed following RAJUK guidelines.

The lawyer also demanded that the affected families be given Tk 20 lakh in interim compensation before the investigation report is submitted.

Six newborns died within a few hours in the post-operative ward of the hospital in the early hours of May 27. Following the incident, the health directorate formed a three-member high-level investigation committee.
