Writ filed seeking order to keep Jatiya Party out of elections
A petition has been filed seeking to disqualify the Jatiya Party (led by GM Quader) and its faction under Anisul Islam Mahmud, along with the Jatiya Democratic Front (NDF) led by Anwar Hossain Manju, from participating in the upcoming elections.
The petition was filed on Sunday (January 4) by Abdullah Al Mahmud, who took part in the July uprising.
Speaking on behalf of the petitioner, Supreme Court lawyer A S M Shahriar Kabir said the petition names the Secretary of the Ministry of Law, Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Cabinet Secretary, Chief Election Commissioner, and Election Commission Secretary as respondents.
He stated, “The 14-party Grand Alliance led by the Awami League has been linked to human rights violations and other crimes according to UN reports. The petition claims that member parties, including the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD/INU), Jatiya Party (Ershad), Jatiya Party (Manju faction), and the Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, have also committed similar offenses. Under Article 66(2)(g) of the Constitution, they are therefore ineligible to contest the election.”
The petition is currently under judicial review, and no verdict has been issued yet.
