A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking a stay on the Shahjalal University of Science Central Students’ Union and hall council elections.

Independent SUCSU candidate Mominur Rashid Shuvo filed the writ on Sunday, January 18, with the relevant High Court bench, naming the chief election commissioner and others as respondents.

The petition argues that the Election Commission has instructed that all elections be suspended ahead of the national parliamentary election, making the SUCSU election scheduled for January 20 unlawful.

Meanwhile, the campaigning period for SUCSU and hall council candidates has been extended by 12 hours. In a notice signed by SUCSU Chief Election Commissioner Abul Mukit Mohammad Mokaddes at around 10:15am on Sunday, it was said that campaigning was disrupted due to a temporary EC suspension. After the EC allowed the election to proceed on January 15, the deadline for campaigning was extended to 9pm on January 18.

Voting in the SUCSU election is scheduled to begin at 9am on January 20.
