Zaher Alvi denied bail in wife's abetment to suicide case
A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of television actor Zaher Alvi in a case filed over allegations of abetting his wife's suicide.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahjahan Kabir passed the order on Monday (July 6) after hearing arguments from both sides, according to state prosecutor Harun Or Rashid.
During the hearing, the defence sought bail on behalf of the actor, while the prosecution opposed the plea, prompting the court to reject the application.
Zaher Alvi surrendered before the court on June 18, when his initial bail plea was also denied and he was sent to jail. Police later sought a 10-day remand, but the court granted a two-day remand on June 24. After the remand ended on June 30, he was sent back to prison.
According to the case statement, the actor's wife, Ikra, was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf at their residence in Mirpur DOHS on February 28. She was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
On the same day, Ikra's father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station, alleging that prolonged domestic disputes and repeated abuse had driven his daughter to take her own life.
Zaher Alvi and Ikra married in 2010 and have a son. Earlier, on June 4, the actor's mother, Nasrin Sultana Shyuli, surrendered before the court in the same case and was granted bail.
