Zaima Rahman receives Independence Award on behalf of Khaleda Zia
The posthumous Independence Award 2026 conferred on former prime minister Khaleda Zia was received by her granddaughter Jaima Rahman at a ceremony in the capital on Thursday (April 16).
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman handed over the country’s highest civilian honour at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, recognising Khaleda Zia’s contributions to independence, democracy and women’s education.
Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh’s first female prime minister, was honoured posthumously for her role in nation-building and long political career, during which she served three terms as head of government.
Zaima Rahman received the award on her behalf at the ceremony attended by senior government and political figures.
The Independence Awards are the highest state honour awarded for distinguished contributions to national service in Bangladesh.
