Ziaur Rahman is an inevitable character of Liberation War: PM
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the most glorious chapter in Bangladesh's history is its independence and the great Liberation War of 1971, because the nation fought and triumphed against one of the world's most powerful armies at that time.
He said, "Generations will discuss and research the glorious saga of independence. However, in the name of discussion or research, nothing should be said that could diminish the glorious history of our independence and Liberation War."
The Prime Minister made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting organised by BNP at the Engineers Institution auditorium in the capital on Friday afternoon, marking the Great Independence and National Day.
The Prime Minister said that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman is one of the most important and inevitable characters of Bangladesh's independence and Liberation War. The attempts in the past to downplay his contribution and role in the Liberation War have proven that he is an inevitable character of the war.
He further said, "Dwelling on the past makes one blind in one eye, while forgetting the past makes one blind in both eyes. Over the last 17 years, there was so much focus on the past that it hindered the future ahead of us."
Tarique Rahman said, "If our aspirations are limitless, our resources are limited. But if we fight together, we can overcome any situation in the country."
Earlier, the Independence Day discussion began at 3:00 pm with recitation from the Holy Quran. The prayer was conducted by Maulana Nesarul Haque, President of the Nationalist Ulema Dal.
Among the senior BNP leaders who spoke at the Independence Day discussion were Standing Committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Abdul Moeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Salahuddin Ahmed.
