Writer and researcher Mohiuddin Ahmed is both a historian and a valiant freedom fighter. Among those who have written, analysed and researched most extensively on the political context of post-independence Bangladesh, he is one of the foremost. He is the only political writer in Bangladesh who wrote a book on the 1973 election, titled Tiyattorer Nirbachan (The Election of ’73). He also wrote Lal Santras: Siraj Sikder o Sarbahara Rajniti (Red Terror: Siraj Sikder and Proletarian Politics), Pratinayak Sirajul Alam Khan (Antihero Sirajul Alam Khan), Awami League BNP Kon Pathe (Which Way Awami League and BNP), JASADer Utthan Patan: Asthir Samayer Rajniti (The Rise and Fall of JASAD: Politics of Turbulent Times), among others. He continues to write on contemporary politics.

Bangladesh questioned due to a distrustful political culture

Even before the end of the DUCSU election, the JUCSU election began and is now nearing its end; but the vote counting has been going on for three days; yet election no longer means transparency or trust, but rather a stage shrouded in rumours, counter-rumours and the shadow of party politics. Meanwhile, reports are heard that although several parties including the BNP took part in the election, they later rejected it. The counting continues; but endless questions remain about what the final result will be.

Why authorities’ bias in DUCSU election

The DUCSU election was not only long-awaited, but alongside people’s expectations, their aspirations were immense. For so long the election had been turned into a farce, and every year fees were taken from educational institutions but there was no elected student union. After many years, the DUCSU election was held in 2019, while in some institutions elections were held once in the 1970s and never again. From such a state we hoped to move towards a truly democratic environment of education and also a democratic environment in politics. Everyone wanted a fair election.

It seems a new stage has emerged in the politics of Bengal. Once upon a time, politics meant open struggle – who could chant slogans the loudest, who could bring the largest procession, who could stir up the crowd by crying out “Joy Bangla” or “Bangladesh Zindabad” in the highest voice. Back then politicians did not hide their identity, rather they were proud to say: “I am a worker of such-and-such party, I am a follower of such-and-such ideology.” But times have changed. Such simple declarations now appear old-fashioned. On the political stage there is now a new wave – not what is open, but what happens behind the scenes is the real thing; its name is secret politics.

Paying heed to old transport syndicate’s unjust demands would be inappropriate

The cradle of the July uprising was the 2018 road safety movement. This movement began across the capital when two school students were killed after being run over by a bus. At that time, two buses of the Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan (currently Poristhan Paribahan) were in a deadly race, and while competing, one bus mounted the pavement in the Staff Road area of Airport Road, killing two students and injuring several others. After this tragic accident, in reply to a query of a journalist, Shahjahan Khan, the then Shipping Minister and a key figure in the transport sector, said with a smile, “An accident is an accident.” It was because of Minister Shahjahan Khan’s indifference towards the students’ deaths in the accident that the students became enraged. The movement spread to almost every educational institution in the capital.

Division among the left: Clash of ideology and lust for leadership, or a reality of power?

Some days ago, the leftists organised a road march from Dhaka to Chattogram under the banner of “Anti-Imperialist Patriotic People,” demanding the protection of national resources and sovereignty. The main slogan of the campaign was: “Mother, land, and estuary—we will not hand them over to foreigners.” Leftists played an important role in movements to protect national resources earlier too. The issue requires extensive discussion. It has often been said that during the Liberation War, political leadership was solely in the hands of the Awami League. You may call this an “Awami narrative” if you like, but this is not the only truth of history. The provisional was mainly formed with Awami League leaders, but alongside that government was an advisory committee headed by Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani. The committee also included Comrade Moni Singh, Mozaffar Ahmed, and Congress leader Manoranjan Dhar. All of them were leftists except Manoranjan Dhar. This clearly shows that ignoring the position of leftists would be an injustice to history.

Journey of Awami League: A chronicle of s truggle for freedom

On the 75th founding anniversary of Awami League, the leading party guiding the Liberation War, we respectfully remember the founding members of the party, including Mojlum Jananeta Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, icon of democracy Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, Shamsul Huq and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Awami League was founded on June 23, 1949, with specific goals and objectives. The founders of Awami League chose the date (June 23) for debut because on this day in 1757, Siraj Ud Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bangla, Bihar, and Orissa lost his battle against the British East India Company.
