Cost of self-destructive sabotage can be enormous
On Monday morning, I was utterly shocked after watching a video clip. Filmed from a distance, the video showed towering flames rising above the trees, lighting up the night sky. At first glance, I thought the footage was from Ukraine or Gaza. But soon I realised I was wrong. According to various media reports, it was not a scene of destruction from abroad, but from Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka—where students of Daffodil International University had vandalised and set fire to the campus of City University. As the day went on, the horror of the incident became even clearer.
The poet who set alphabet ablaze with resistance
There is no greater achievement in our national life than the struggle for independence and the Liberation War. Countless poems have been written about these subjects. Poet Shamsur Rahman portrayed independence, the Liberation War, and patriotism in poetry with a powerful and aesthetic touch. His poems have found a place on people's lips, in slogans, on placards, wall writings, banners, and festoons. Like:
Milestone Tragedy: Expressions of grief and some observations
July 21, 2025, Monday, was a sunny day in the Bengali month of Srabon. But at noon that day, a tragic crash or accident of a Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet at the campus of Milestone School and College turned the day into a national tragedy for Bangladesh. In an instant, the Diabari campus in Uttara seemed to transform into an unknown battlefield, where no one was an enemy of another. Many children, who had packed their bags to return home, lost their lives. Many parents lost their little princes and princesses forever. The pilot of the aircraft, promising Air Force officer Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam, also perished. So far, 34 people have died in the accident, most of them school children.
A cultural beacon Sanjida Khatun, a life beyond death
In every nation, among every people and culture, there are individuals who dedicate their entire lives to the relentless pursuit of art, humanity, and the greater good of their country. They become torchbearers, guiding lights, never looking back at their own personal gains or momentary pleasures. One such extraordinary individual was Sanjida Khatun (April 4, 1933 – March 25, 2025), the former president of Chhayanaut.
Why should we regret on the 72nd anniversary of the Language Movement?
As we celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the Language Movement, it is essential to express regret over the fact that the Bengali language has not received the respect it deserved as the state language of an independent country. Despite the expectation that Bengali should have attained its rightful place, it has not. The reasons for this are numerous, including the coexistence of three different education systems in the country, the lack of Bengali language use in the higher judiciary, and the absence of effective measures for the widespread use of Bengali at all levels of society. However, to find the root cause, we must look deeper.
